Merton graduate student wins Naomi Schor Memorial Award
Doctoral student Helen Craske was named as joint winner of the prize by the international scholarly society, the Nineteenth-Century French Studies Association, at its annual conference held in California at the end of October.

New DPhil scholarship established in memory of Mertonian James Upcher (2006)
Graduate student Tsvetelina van Benthem is the first recipient of the scholarship, established thanks to the generosity of London-based public international law firm Fietta LLP where James was a consultant.

Sir Thomas Lawrence’s portrait of Shute Barrington (1752) rehung following move
The portrait has been rehung following its move from the Hall and a light clean. One of the finest artworks in the College’s collection, the painting by celebrated portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) is now located on the Fitzjames Staircase.

A new CD of choral music by British composer Richard Allain has been released to very positive reviews, including five stars for both performance and recording from BBC Music Magazine.

Wyliot Fellow John Booth made Chairman of The Prince’s Trust
Mr Booth, who matriculated in 1976 and read Modern Languages, has also been appointed to the Tate's Board of Trustees.

Alex Little takes 3rd Place and Bach Prizes at NI International Organ Competition
Merton's Senior Organ Scholar was one of 13 shortlisted competitors, drawn from an extensive long list of organists aged 21 and under from across the world, who performed on the organ of St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh.

Merton law student wins 2018 Disraeli Society Prize
Law undergraduate Niamh Kelly (2015) has been awarded the inaugural prize, and will attend the Federalist Society Student Symposium in the USA in March 2019.

Professor Judith Armitage named as next President of the Microbiology Society
Judy, who first joined the society as a PhD student in the early 1970s, will take up the role in January 2019, and serve as President for three years.
