Merton College Mentoring

The Merton Society Council, working with the Development and Alumni Relations Office, has developed a bespoke mentoring programme for and by Mertonians. This is called “Merton College Mentoring” or “MCM”. To start with, mentoring will be offered to undergraduate leavers who completed their undergraduate studies in 2022 and 2023. The intention is to expand the programme so that, in time, any Merton graduate will be able to ask for a mentor drawn from the Merton community.

MCM is outlined in this document: Mentoring Programme Outline Plan.

MCM grew out of a pilot mentoring scheme conducted in 2022-23 for recent Merton undergraduate leavers. Students who had completed their studies in the years just before then had been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 43 mentees came forward. The Merton Society, working with the College, identified suitable mentors from the College’s alumni and fellowship body.

Once the pilot was completed, participants were asked to provide feedback. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. This document summarises that feedback.

MCM retains many of the features of that pilot scheme but it is designed on a bigger scale and to be a permanent part of the Merton Society’s work.

MCM aims to help mentees with their personal and professional development. Meetings with a mentor take place one to one and confidentially. The meetings are a safe space for the mentee to discuss matters of concern or interest with their mentor.

Mentors and mentees who participate in MCM are given training and must commit to our Code of Conduct. They will be supported by the Development and Alumni Relations Office.

Anyone who has attended Merton, or is a fellow of Merton, can be an MCM mentor. The success of MCM depends on being able to offer a wide range of mentors for our prospective mentees to choose from. So please do put yourself forward here or click the Mentor Registration box below.

Mertonians eligible to apply as MCM mentees will be notified by email when the programme is open to them. So please make sure that the College holds up to date details for you and please do apply, when your time comes, if you think you might find mentoring discussions of this sort useful.

Mertonians with any questions or comments are very welcome to get in touch.
