Library Medieval Stained Glass Appeal: completed
In 2021, Merton College embarked on an urgent project to preserve the unique medieval stained-glass windows in the Upper Library. The surviving original windows were installed by the 1390s, and are the oldest surviving examples of glazing for any English library. The windows were suffering from irreversible damage due to condensation, but we were able to halt this damaging process with a ventilated protective glazing system.

These windows are a focal point of the historic and captivating Upper Library, and have been enjoyed by Mertonians and the wider community throughout the ages. This project has been a once-only opportunity to prevent these rare examples of stained glass from being damaged further, and to ensure that future generations can enjoy these stunning testaments to the history and tradition of Merton College.
We are delighted to report that the appeal was completed in late 2023, and the restoration project is in progress.
