The Reach Scholarship was created by the Oxford University Student Union in 1990 to ensure that talented students from low-income countries have equal access to the opportunity to study at Oxford. The Scholarship is funded collaboratively by the University, the College and the JCR.

“Even before I received an offer to study physics at Oxford, I had known that, even with the financial resources of my whole family, I would not be able to pay even one per cent of the tuition fees. I have wanted to study physics since primary school, but at home in Serbia there isn’t the equipment or resources for me to study to my full potential. When I heard that I had been selected as Reach Oxford Scholar, it felt like my dreams had come true. The Scholarship is the only scholarship offered by the University that covers all the costs of studying at Oxford. It is enabling me to study the subject that I love at one of the best universities in the world at the highest possible level.

“It is a great honour for me to be the first Merton Reach Oxford Scholar and I hope that the College will succeed in fundraising and that there will be more Reach Scholars after me. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the establishment of the Reach Oxford Scholarship at Merton and to everyone who donated to the fund. It is a wonderful gesture to enable someone from a low-income country to study at the best place in the world.”
