Professor Amrit Mudher (1998)
Amritpal Mudher is a neuroscientist whose work focuses on understanding how tau pathology drives neurodegeneration in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia. After completing a BSc at King’s College London and a DPhil in Neuroscience at Oxford, she developed a research program using Drosophila models to uncover how abnormal tau disrupts neuronal transport, synaptic function, and cellular homeostasis. Her group has since expanded these findings to identify tau-mediated mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets, contributing to a broader shift toward understanding early, soluble, and toxic forms of tau rather than only aggregated tangles.
Alongside her research, Mudher has held an Alzheimer’s Society Research Fellowship and built a long-standing partnership with major dementia charities and academic funders. Her work is recognised for bridging mechanistic basic science with translational aspirations aimed at disease-modifying interventions.
In her leadership role as Associate Dean (International) in the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, she helps shape the university’s global strategy—developing international partnerships, supporting global student engagement, and promoting outward-facing academic activity. Her own international background and public engagement work further strengthen her contribution to the university’s global mission and the broader dementia research community.
