Information on medical registration, disability, and welfare.

Medical Registration

The College Doctors (Drs Leaver, Lambert and Valentine) are based at the Jericho Health Centre, located just north of the city centre and about 25 minutes' walk from College. New members of College are required to register with them — to do so, follow the instructions to register online by 30th September.

If you are already registered with another surgery in Oxford, or you wish to remain registered with your existing GP for medical reasons, please notify the Academic Registrar, Jemma Underdown as soon as possible outlining your reasons, and providing the name and address of your current GP. You are strongly encouraged to register with a doctor in Oxford so that you can access treatment quickly if you fall ill during term time.

Non-UK students should read the relevant information about medical treatment and registration on the international students page.

A medical information session will take place in Freshers’ Week. This session is compulsory for all freshers, including those registered with a surgery other than Jericho Health Centre. Further information on medical provision is available in the College Handbook. See also:

Disability

Merton works closely with the University's Disability Advisory Service (DAS) to offer information, assistance and support to students with any disability that may impact on their academic, social or residential experience at Oxford. The DAS introductory guide offers an overview of how to access its services and support.

In our experience, support can be most effective if we are provided with the details of any disability or chronic condition as soon as possible before the start of term.

  • If you disclosed a disability on your application form, you should have already received separate correspondence from us to discuss preparations for your arrival.
  • If you have not yet disclosed a disability or chronic condition, we encourage you to get in touch with Suzi Hughes (mental health and autism) and/or Cressida Ryan (other disabilities), the Disability Officers at the DAS linked to Merton, and also to complete the Disability Advisory Service registration form as soon as possible.

All disclosures are treated confidentially. Please contact Merton's Disability Coordinator, Jemma Underdown with any questions, or take a look at our entry in the University's Access Guide and the Disability Advisory Service website for further information.

Welfare

You will meet the Welfare Team during Freshers' Week, and there will be lots of events and activities organised by both the College and the JCR's welfare team throughout the term. As you'll see from the JCR Welfare Letter and the Welfare page of the college website, there is a wealth of information available to students about the welfare networks and provision in College and across the wider University.
