Matthew spoke about his extensive work with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), particularly with respect to the United Nations in New York. Matthew is the UK's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and has had a long and varied career in the Civil Service: He was Private Secretary to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2004, work for which he was made a CBE. He was British Ambassador to Bosnia & Herzegovina from 2005 to 2008, Director of Europe for the FCO from 2008 to 2011, and was then made Chief Operating Officer of the FCO, before taking on his present appointment in New York in 2015.
