Professor James Newton
I moved to Oxford in 2021, as Associate Professor of Number Theory in the Mathematical Institute and Tutor and Fellow in Mathematics at Merton. I previously worked as a Lecturer at King's College London and in postdoctoral positions at Cambridge and Imperial College London.
My research interests are in number theory and its interactions with algebra and geometry. I am particularly interested in the Langlands programme, which is a broad collection of mathematical theories and techniques which describe symmetries of algebraic equations in novel ways.
I have taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, with a focus on topics in algebra and number theory. I supervise graduate students in algebraic number theory.
