Dr Gareth Brookes

Visiting Artist Research Fellow

Background

I am a practice-based artist researcher using graphic narratives to produce insights into issues around embodiment and trace, the technological remediation of materiality, narratology and genre, archives and generative technology.

I gained a PhD from Central Saint Martins, UAL in 2024. My thesis was titled Embodied Responses to Materiality in the Making and Reading of Comics, and was supported by a Techne AHRC scholarship. I will be undertaking a Visiting Artist Research Fellowship at Merton College, Oxford, exploring the archives of Michael Field held in the Bodleian Library to produce graphic narratives responding to their radical intersubjective writing practice.

I serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics.

Teaching

Between 2014 -2021 I was a Lecturer in Foundation Studies, City & Guilds School of Art London.

I have been an invited visiting lecturer at the following institutions: Girton College University of Cambridge, University of Leeds, Ghent University Belgium, Falmouth School of Art, University of Gloucestershire, Central Saint Martins University of the Arts London, University of York St John, University of Viborg, Denmark, Lincoln University, Bryn Mawr College, Philadelphia, University of Norwich, University of Plymouth, and the Royal Collage of Art, London.

Research

My research interests include materiality and embodiment, small press and underground comics, conversations between fine art and comics, and the affect of technology on narrative drawing.
