Remembering Kris Kristofferson (1936-2024)
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Kris Kristofferson, an alumnus and a friend of Merton. Kris, who attended Merton in 1958 as a Rhodes Scholar, graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy in English Literature in 1960. His time at Merton left an indelible mark not only on the world of music and film but also on our College community.
During his time at Merton, Kris embraced a variety of pursuits, earning a Blue for boxing, playing rugby for the College, and laying the early foundation for what would become a legendary songwriting career. His journey here, marked by creativity and camaraderie, also included time spent among fellow Rhodes scholars, such as the art critic and poet Michael Fried. The memories of his years at Oxford remained close to his heart, and he delighted the College with a spontaneous performance at a Rhodes Alumni dinner in 2013, pictured left.
Though Kris eventually left academic life and a promising military career, he went on to captivate the world through his music.
Kris will be remembered not only for his contributions to music and film but also as a cherished member of Merton College. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he impacted.
