Miguel Walsh invited to address 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians

Special Fellow in Mathematics Dr Miguel Walsh has been invited to speak at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), the largest conference in mathematics. Although formally not an award, an invitation to speak at an ICM is viewed in the mathematical world as an outstanding honour.

The ICM meets once every four years, hosted by the International Mathematical Union and hands out the most important prizes in the subject, notably the Fields Medal and the Nevanlinna and Gauss Prizes. In August 2018 the Congress meets in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Miguel will be one of a team of six from Oxford whose wide-ranging interests demonstrate not just the strength of mathematics at the University, but also the scope of the subject in the 21st Century.

Miguel and fellow ICM invitee James Maynard are also Clay Research Fellows: The Clay Mathematics Institute supports the work of leading researchers at various stages of their careers and organises conferences, workshops, and summer schools; its annual Research Award recognises contemporary breakthroughs in mathematics.

In 2014, Miguel was awarded the ICTP Ramanujan Prize for his contributions to mathematics; he is the youngest recipient to date of the award.
