The medal, presented each year to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the field of astrophysics, has previously been awarded to Professors Sandra FaberAndrei LindeRoger Blandford and the late Wal Sargent.

Professor Binney received the medal at a ceremony held in the 17th century Observatoire de Paris at the end of June.
