MCR association

Two categories of association are available for non-Mertonians:

Associates in Category A are entitled to four meals, including no more than two dinners, per week in Hall, for which they must pay; and to make use of the MCR, the College bar and the sporting facilities. They are not entitled to College accommodation or to use College computing facilities or libraries. The subscription is £40 per term. This is reserved for academic affiliates of Merton, doing research in Oxford at a senior level, but who are not reading for Oxford degrees or are not members of another college. Endorsement by a Fellow of the College with knowledge of the candidate’s academic work is required.

Associates in Category B may make use of the MCR, the College Bar, and sporting facilities. They may attend MCR functions, but are not entitled to College accommodation or to use College computing facilities or libraries. The subscription is £20 per term. This category is restricted to:

  1. the domestic partners of current Merton students (so long as both are resident in Oxford); and
  2. former Merton students (who left within 5 years) who are resident in Oxford and engaged on a course of study at any university.

The categories of MCR association are subject to the Constitution and Standing Orders of the MCR, which are amended from time to time. For the avoidance of doubt, the active Constitution and Standing Orders of the MCR have precedence over any information on this website.

Applications for MCR association may be granted for up to one academic year at a time (re-election for subsequent years may be possible) and must be supported by a CV. In the case of an application for Category A association a letter of support from a Fellow of the College with knowledge of the candidate’s academic work is also required. Further details are outlined in the relevant section of College bylaw V.11.

MCR Associates who are elected cannot suspend any term of their association.  Applicants are advised to take this into account when considering the period of requested association.

MCR Associates must apply for re-election at the beginning of each academic year (using the same application form) if they wish to continue their association, and none shall continue for more than five years. There is a limit of fifty Category A associates at any one time. MCR association may also be revoked at any time by the committee responsible for election.

Applications will be considered by the Dean of Graduates and the President and Treasurer of the Middle Common Room. Applicants are usually notified of the outcome of their application within ten days of the deadline.

Please note that MCR association may only be granted for one academic year at a time (re-election for subsequent years may be possible).
