IT & Email
Information on setting up your IT and getting connected to the internet.
Getting Set Up
New students receive two emails from the Student Information & Advisory Service. The first email will provide your Student Number, and the second will give details of your Oxford Single Sign-On (SSO, also known as your Oxford IT Account). Follow the instructions in the second email to activate your Oxford SSO and activate your IT account.
To get connected to the Internet in College, you will need to register for a remote access account. You need an SSO to do this, so complete the activation process described above first.
We recommend that you go through these steps before you arrive in order to have access to the Internet as soon as you move into College.
Refer to the University IT Services webpage for further instructions on how to connect to the wireless network in College (eduroam). It is recommended that you make a note of or print out the instructions so that you can quickly get yourself connected to the internet when you arrive.
Wired Ethernet connections are available on request and where there is a suitable reason. If the wireless service does not meet your requirements, you can register your devices for wired access on the Intranet. (please note that you will need your University card details).
Further Information
The IT department's intranet pages explain in some detail the IT facilities and services available to you both within Merton and the wider University. You will be able to access the Intranet once you receive your Single Sign On details. Please see also the Getting Started guide for IT in College.
The IT Intranet pages will contain answers to many of the common questions asked by new members of the College.
If you have any questions which arise concerning IT provision at Merton before you arrive please do not hesitate to get in touch. Unfortunately, the College IT team is not able to repair hardware problems on student PCs and peripherals, but they are keen to hear feedback relating to college IT facilities.
IT Services Shop Downloads
There is a range of software available to university members at discounted rates which can be downloaded from the University Online Shop. In some cases the downloads are free - including Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus - and in others there is a charge.
