Merton awarded Oxford Preservation Trust plaque

The Oxford Preservation Trust has awarded the Building Conservation plaque for 2025 to the Merton Upper Library Window Project. In May 2025 the project to conserve and protect all 39 stained-glass windows in the Upper Library was successfully completed. The programme of work was designed and undertaken by stained-glass specialists, York Glaziers Trust. The windows were removed, cleaned, conserved and re-installed incorporating an innovative ventilated external secondary glazing system. Additional repairs to windows and wall panelling were undertaken by Owlsworth IJP. Merton’s maintenance team provided essential support and help through the project, which lasted almost four years. The work was funded by Mertonians from around the world.

In making the award, the Oxford Preservation Trust said: The judges commended the innovative, sustainable and sensitive treatment of the protective glazing, which fits well with the historic architecture of Mob Quad. They were impressed by the engagement of trainees, interns and students in the project—and delighted to see this exceptional glass so expertly cared for.

Fellow Librarian Julia Walworth: ‘The beautiful library windows are now protected for the future, thanks to the work of skilled experts. This was a genuine team effort, and I’m thrilled that the college will be able to display the Oxford Preservation Trust plaque.
