College comes together to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees
The College community has been involved in fundraising efforts for the Ukrainian refugee crisis. Biology undergraduate James McCulloch, who is the JCR's Sports Representative-elect, reports:
"On Saturday 5 March, a courageous group of students faced a very strong team of Merton academics on the Merton Sports Ground in a game of rounders organised by the JCR to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. The students ought to have been more nervous than they were, as brilliant hits from The Warden, Professor Alex Scott, Dr Olivia Elder, and Andrew Mackie resulted in full rounders, and an impressive catch by Dr Elder ensured a resounding victory for the academics team.

Around £200 was received from those in attendance, and this will be transformed into a very respectable sum thanks to some very generous matching donors. We look forward to running a similar event in Trinity term when the weather will leave no excuses for the student team!"

On the following Monday, 7 March, our Academic Office staff held their Annual Charity Bake Sale, with a multitude of cakes baked and donated by staff across the College. The sale of these to a steady stream of eager students, staff and Fellows raised a fantastic £555.75 - this will now be added to £145 raised from the sale of second-hand gowns last term, making a total donation towards the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis appeal of £700.75.

Our Chapel collections during Hilary term have raised £1,251 for Ukraine. Students have also held collections at recent social events, and are planning further fundraising activities next term.
