Claudette Johnson, painter of Merton's Stuart Hall portrait, nominated for the Turner Prize

Described by Modern Art Oxford as 'one of the most accomplished figurative artists working in Britain today', British artist Claudette Johnson is the creator of Merton College's portrait of 'radical intellectual', founding figure of cultural studies and Honorary Fellow, Stuart Hall. Today, Claudette Johnson was announced as one of the nominees for the 2024 Turner Prize, Britain's most prestigious contemporary art award.

The portrait of Stuart Hall hangs in Hall at Merton alongside other esteemed portraits of Fellows and Wardens. The portrait was celebrated at a dedicated event at Merton College in May 2023, where the artist spoke, alongside Becky Hall, Gilane Tawadros, Ruth Ramsden-Karelse, and Dr David Dibosa.
