The Big Merton 1264 Challenge

Launching this Saturday, The Big Merton 1264 Challenge aims to bring our entire community together during this difficult period to have fun, inspire one another, and raise money for two important causes.

Taking a lead from the year the College was founded, our students have put their heads together and come up with a whole array of different events and activities on the theme of 1264 – and we're calling on all Mertonians past and present, our staff and Fellows to take up one or more of these challenges, come up with new challenges, and to post the results on social media when you're done, using the hashtag #1264Challenge.

Kicking off the event this Saturday will be the Warden, Professor Irene Tracey and her family, who have pledged to run 12.64km together from 10:00am. They’re encouraging others to do the same, or to come up with their own way to take up the 1264 Challenge:

“Please join us – at least in spirit – on Saturday morning, and across the next 12.64 days; we’d love to see what you’re doing, we can’t wait to hear about the clever 1264-related ideas you come up with, and we hope this will inspire other Mertonians to get involved, come together as a community, and donate to our chosen causes.”

The Big Merton 1264 Challenge will be raising funds for two causes: The Merton Hardship Fund, which has been set up specifically to help all members of the college community who are facing financial difficulties as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic; and Oxford Mutual Aid, a collective of over a thousand volunteers in Oxford who are working seven days a week to get food and medicine to families and individuals in need, as well as NHS staff and other key workers.

Want to get involved but not on social media? Send details of your Big Merton 1264 Challenge activities to facebook@merton.ox.ac.uk and we’ll share them with the college community.
