Subject: Classics and joint schools

I applied to Merton to study Classics Course II but was able to change to Classics and Arabic after my second year exams.  Taking the first two years of your degree to just focus on Classics gives you a great grounding and a full appreciation of the depth and breadth of the subject, before bringing in intensive Arabic in the third year. At this point, you pick up a whole new language from scratch with both Modern and Classical and texts, showing how much can be achieved in a few terms. Completely free choice of your Classics Finals modules allows you to tailor your degree to be as tied in to the Arabic as possible, or to keep them totally distinct. I was also able to use a Merton travel grant to visit Rome.
