Tony Hansen (1969)

Former Researcher in Atmospheric Environmental Science

Tony Hansen's background is in experimental physics, instrumentation and aerosol science. He was a Staff Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of the University of California for thirty years. From 1977 to 1990 he was a member of the Atmospheric Aerosol Research Group led by Dr. T. Novakov, during which time he developed the Aethalometer concept for the real-time measurement of optically-absorbing aerosols.

Tony founded ‘Magee Scientific’ in 1986 for the development and commercialization of this instrument and demonstrated its use in research projects at remote locations such as Siberia, the Arctic, and Antarctica. In 1990 he transferred to the Instrumentation and Automation Group of the LBNL Engineering Division and retired from LBNL in 2006 to focus full time on Carbonaceous Aerosols. Tony holds several patents and has published more than 100 papers and reports in scientific literature.
