Retired: business owner (environmental measuring instrument)
Always had 'practical' skills: screwdriver, soldering iron. Read Physics at Merton. Went to University of California, Berkeley in 1972 for PhD in Physics. Joined 'Atmospheric Aerosol Group' at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 1977 to study suspended particles (smoke). Developed simple method for real-time measurement ("Aethalometer") in 1979. Was asked to make instruments for sale to environmental organization, started private business in garden shed in 1986. Business grew rapidly. Transferred to 1/2-time position in automation and robotics for biotech at LBNL in 1990, retired from LBNL in 2005. Started commercial contract manufacturing in EU in 1996; formed own company there in 2007 - now has 35 employees. Travelled the world very widely to promote and install equipment. Retired from active business in 2021.
