After reading English at Merton, I taught English for a year in Shanghai, followed by an MA in Chinese Studies at SOAS. I studied Chinese for two years in Beijing, and then became a journalist in China, where I lived for 14 years.
These days I live in Oxford but still work for a Hong Kong-based research firm that serves global investors. I write mainly about China and India, and travel a lot for work (reporting from over countries). I have written two books, frequently appear in international media, and do a lot of public speaking.
