Professor Sir Peter Horby

FMedSci, FRCP, FRS
Sir Henry Savile Fellow

I trained in medicine at University College London and went on to specialise in emerging and epidemic prone infectious diseases. I lived and worked in Southeast Asia for 11 years, working initially for the World Health Organisation before establishing a research centre at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, Vietnam. I returned to the University of Oxford in 2014, where I am the Moh Family Foundation Professor of Emerging Infections and Global Health, and Director of the Pandemic Sciences Institute.

Research
I have led research on a wide range of emerging and epidemic infections, including SARS, avian influenza, Ebola, Lassa fever, plague, monkeypox and COVID-19. My main interest is improving the diagnosis, care, and outcomes of people infected with epidemic prone and dangerous pathogens. However, I am interested in all aspects of epidemic forecasting, detection and control, and I am an enthusiastic advisor to the UK Government and the World Health Organisation.
