Professor Samuel C. Fletcher

Tutor in Philosophy, Professor of Philosophy of Physics

In September 2024, I joined the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Philosophy as Professor of Philosophy of Physics and became a Fellow at Merton College. Through a continuing affiliation with the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science, I will serve as Principal Investigator of the project, A Modern Philosophy for Classical Statistical Testing and Estimation, until 2026.

More information regarding my publications and research can be found on my personal website.

Research

Much of my work has focused on the foundations of physics and statistics, exploring how problems in these fields both inform and are informed by broader issues in the philosophy of science. I am also interested in the conceptual and physical basis of computation, metaphilosophy, and the history of physics and philosophy of science.

Teaching

I teach tutorials and supervise students at all levels in the philosophy of science and philosophy of physics, as well as most logic-related papers for undergraduates. Additionally, I teach Turing to first-year Computer Science and Philosophy students.
