Justin Wormald

Stipendiary Lecturer in Clinical Surgery

I am an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Specialist Registrar (ST7) in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. I am the Deputy Director of the Surgical Interventional Trials Unit (SITU) at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS), University of Oxford. I work 50% of the time as a surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with the other 50% of my time dedicated to research and teaching at the University of Oxford. In 2023, I completed a full-time DPhil in Musculoskeletal Sciences, funded via the NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship (NIHR DRF) programme. Prior to my DPhil, I completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (NIHR ACF) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at NDORMS, University of Oxford and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. My undergraduate training took place at the University of East Anglia, where I attained my MB/BS and Master of Health Research (MRes) with distinction. I undertook my foundation years and core surgical training in London at St. Mary's Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. I am now the Trainee Lead for the Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network (RSTN) and an Associate Surgical Specialty Lead for Plastic and Hand Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS). I am the Patient and Public Involvement Lead for the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and am a member of the British Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeons (BAPRAS) Research Committee. I have recently been appointed as a Sara Hope Browne Research Associate at Jesus College, Oxford.

Research

Evaluation of surgical interventions, in both experimental and observational studies, for traumatic injury, cancer and elective conditions forms the basis of my research programme in Oxford. My own specific research interest encompasses the development of surgical trials in limb trauma and reconstruction, including evaluation of interventions to mitigate post-operative infection and optimise patient-related outcomes. I work closely with Professor Matt Costa, of the Oxford Trauma and Emergency Care group and Professor David Beard, of the Surgical Interventional Trials Unit, designing and supporting new clinical trials in surgery, in my field of plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as other specialist areas. I supervise DPhil and MSc students as part of this programme. I have 108 peer-reviewed publications, have contributed to two book chapters, have presented work at 84 national and international conferences, and have acquired over £4 million in research grants. I provide peer review for the NIHR, the British Medical Journal, the British Journal of Surgery and the major plastic, orthopaedic and hand surgery journals.

Teaching

In my role as the Stipendiary Lecturer in Clinical Surgery at Merton College, I teach clinical surgery, clinical anatomy, clinical research methods, and offer clinical academic careers advice and pastoral support. My focus is to prepare students for their Final Examinations in 6th year BM BCh, starting in 4th year, where students can begin the transition to clinical practice. I am especially interested in improving performance in clinical OSCEs, ensuring students can convey their detailed knowledge in an effective and confident manner under pressure. I teach history-taking, clinical examination, and formation of differential diagnoses via formal bedside teaching on the wards and complex case discussions, using both to frame relevant knowledge within real-world evidence-based practice. In addition, I teach procedural skills, including surgical suturing, for the medical school, and lead journal club discussions. I have previously taught clinical medicine at Imperial College London, anatomy at University College London and most recently, clinical surgery as the Clinical Teaching Associate for Surgery at St. John’s College, Oxford (2021-2024). I have also formed part of the interview panel for undergraduate medicine for the last two years at St. John’s College and will interview for Merton College in 2024.
