I have spent my career in the UK state education system (apart from 3 years teaching in Zimbabwe). I have been a headteacher of challenging state schools and taught and led education across the 11-18 age range. My particular expertise and interest is in children who "go down the gaps" of our education system and in the inclusion of those with childhood trauma and additional educational needs. Since stepping down from headship I have launched an educational charity to make provision, re-engage and support children (and families) who are too anxious to attend school on a regular basis. I would describe myself as someone who is profoundly engaged with education, who feels very strongly that equality of educational opportunity is exceptionally important because of its life-changing potential. That has led me to work "at the coalface" of state education seeking to make a difference to the lives of individual children and their families.
