Born in Little Rock, Arkansas USA in 1951. Education: B.A. in History, College of William and Mary, 1973; matriculated at Merton in 1973; M. Litt. in History, Oxford (Marshall Scholar, Merton), 1975; J.D., Harvard Law School, 1978; D. Phil. in History, Oxford (Merton), 1997. Law career: admitted to the bar in 1979. Academic career: taught law to postgraduates from 1979 to 2023; taught history to undergraduates from 2006-17. Dean of the University of Richmond School of Law (Virginia USA), 1997-2003. University Professor Emeritus at Richmond since 2018.
