I am a Molecular Genetics Specialist currently working in clinical genetics, where I interpret genetic test results, classify genetic variants and contribute to diagnostic reports, with a particular focus on cancer genetics and genomics. I also provide scientific support to physicians, helping them select appropriate genetic tests and interpret their results.
My career began in academic research. I studied Microbial Biology and Genetics at the University of Lisbon before moving to Oxford, where I completed a PhD in Clinical Medicine at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and Merton College. My doctoral research focused on the genetics of autism. I subsequently spent several years as a postdoctoral researcher in Lisbon, working on the genetics and genomics of human disease, including primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
I later moved into industry, working in both genetic diagnostics and healthcare innovation. At Coimbra Genomics, I combined scientific and clinical expertise with healthcare liaison, supporting physicians and healthcare organisations and contributing to the development and adoption of genetic testing products.
Alongside my scientific career, I have enjoyed teaching, supervising students and supporting early-career researchers. I have taught medical students, supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, and mentored trainees in clinical genetics. I would particularly value the opportunity to share my experience of navigating different career paths within science and healthcare.
