Henry Day (1999)

Barrister (Chancery/commercial)

I am a self-employed barrister at Radcliffe Chambers in London, specialising in the fields of trusts, pensions, private client and financial services. My practice combines advocacy and advisory work, sometimes involving an international element, with clients including law firms, corporates, financial institutions, trustees, charities and private individuals.

I followed a slightly roundabout path to law. I graduated from Merton with a BA in Classics in 2003 and stayed on to study for an MSt in Classical Languages and Literature. I then spent a year in London as an editorial intern at the London Review of Books. In 2005 I began a PhD in Classical Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. During my doctorate I undertook research stints at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and the Freie Universität in Berlin, taught undergraduates at Cambridge and Birkbeck and continued to work as a consultant at the London Review of Books. I submitted my doctoral thesis in 2009 and published a revised version of it with Cambridge University Press in 2013.

After deciding on a change of professional direction, I completed the Graduate Diploma in Law in 2010, followed by the Bar Professional Training Course in 2011, both at City, University of London. I was called to the Bar of England and Wales by Lincoln’s Inn and completed my training (“pupillage”) at Radcliffe in 2012.

I would be especially interested in mentoring Mertonians who are contemplating careers in the law (particularly at the Chancery Bar), academia (particularly in the humanities) and/or the arts, journalism and publishing area.
