Grace Khuri (2008)

Medieval Literature (Old and Middle English; Old Norse); First World War (history, poetry); J.R.R. Tolkien, William Morris, Medievalism

I am currently a research assistant on Professor Stuart D. Lee's project: 'British Fantasy and the First World War' (John Fell Fund). Last year, I completed my D.Phil, the first doctoral thesis on J.R.R. Tolkien at Oxford, entitled: 'Tolkien's Eldar Edda: Old Norse Myth, the Great War, and the Writing of the "Silmarillion."' Before this, my first two degrees were at Merton: B.A. English Language and Literature (Course II; First Honours) and M.Phil (Medieval English, 550-1550; Distinction). I am a member of the Oxford Tolkien Network and regularly speak at conferences and literary festivals; public engagement experience includes interviews with The Observer and BBC Culture, along with several recorded lectures for Oxford University Podcasts (Great Writers Inspire - Fantasy Literature). My research has been published with Studies in Medievalism and Palgrave Macmillan, and I have several years' experience teaching and mentoring visiting and matriculated students at Oxford colleges, study abroad programs, and for Oxford Lifelong Learning (2026/2027). Previous colleges I have taught for include Exeter, Christ Church, Magdalen, and Balliol. Alongside subject-specific advice, I have guided students in developing their research skills, using archives, and developing effective and clear communication in presentations, essays, and dissertations.
