Background

I am a political scientist, specializing in political economy. Prior to arriving at Merton, I graduated with a BA in Politics and a BA in Law from the University of Valencia. I then completed a Master’s in Social Sciences at Carlos III University, before arriving at Oxford to do a PhD in Politics, funded jointly by the Ramón Areces Foundation and La Caixa Foundation.

Teaching

I currently teach Comparative Political Economy.

Research

My research revolves around the question of why people reject full equality and tolerate that some individuals are economically better off than others. The common thread is the attention paid to the role of fairness beliefs. More particularly, during my postdoc, I aim to examine the roots of support for meritocracy in the West, paying attention to the concepts of merit and equality of opportunity. My first book project, Inequality and Meritocracy in the West: A Marriage Story, precisely examines this issue, bringing insights from sociology, economics, and political science. I argue that merit is a multidimensional concept that needs to be differentiated from  equality of opportunity and linked to individuals’ occupations".
