Catalina Isabel Melgarejo Espina (2023)

Lecturer in Labour and Migration Law, Human Rights Researcher, and Independent Legal Practitioner

I am a Chilean lawyer with a law degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a Magister Juris from the University of Oxford, and a Master’s in Fundamental Rights from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. My career combines legal practice, research, and teaching in labour law, migration law, and human rights.

I currently work as a researcher with the Corporate Sustainability Programme at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, contributing to its fifth assessment of business and human rights. I also practise independently and teach at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Alberto Hurtado, and Universidad Diego Portales.

Previously, I worked as a human rights research lawyer in the Chilean Supreme Court’s Research Directorate and as a lawyer at Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supporting the State’s legal representation before the Inter-American Human Rights System. I was also an associate in the labour and immigration practice at Guerrero Olivos, advising on corporate employment matters, collective bargaining, and litigation.

While studying at Oxford, I volunteered with a legal aid clinic assisting foreign nationals in prison. I have published on labour rights, migration, and human rights, and received awards recognising my commitment to pro bono work.
