I left Merton in 2007 after reading Modern Languages (French and German) and was already supplementing my income with freelance translation work. After some internships at newspapers, I set up as a freelance journalist, translator, and author in Hamburg, Germany – and the rest, as they say, is history. Two decades, three (commercially unsuccessful) books, and millions of words later, I'm still there, still freelance, and always happy to talk to anyone interested in working for themselves.
