Having done a biochemistry degree at Merton, I went to Imperial in London and undertook a PhD in immunology, but then altered course marginally dramatically (!) and went back to Oxford for medical school. I was surprised to realize that surgery was where I felt most at home, and a year after medical school, I found myself as a general surgery resident at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I then did a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. I'm now a pediatric surgeon in practice at the children's hospital at Penn State in Hershey in Pennsylvania. I'm our lead for pediatric surgical oncology so have a special interest and skillset in taking care of children with solid tumors.
I have two children (7yo and 1yo) and a hectic life but it is intensely rewarding and I'd be happy to chat with any Merton student who is looking to find their path. I'm passionate about work/life balance, and putting your time and your effort very intentionally where you want it to be.
