Portfolio Manager at a Hedge Fund

I am a Portfolio Manager at a hedge fund, specialising in systematic FX and equity index options strategies. My work involves quantitative research and the development of trading strategies, valuation models and risk management tools; I also lead a team trading options across interest rates, metals, energy and commodities.

Before moving into hedge funds, I spent ten years at investment banks as an FX options market maker. That experience gave me a practical grounding in how markets really behave and how risk is managed in fast-moving, high-pressure environments.

I chose this career because I wanted to use mathematics in an entrepreneurial way — applying theory to real decisions with real consequences, rather than following a more traditional path into accountancy or actuarial work. Over time, I have learned that success in this field comes not just from technical skill, but from curiosity, resilience and a willingness to keep improving when things don’t work the first time.

Alongside my professional work, I volunteer at my local primary school helping children who struggle with maths. This has reinforced for me how important confidence and clear explanation are, whether you are working with six-year-olds or graduates starting their careers.

I enjoy helping students understand how academic ideas translate into practical problems, and how to navigate the early career choices that can feel overwhelming from the outside. I live in North London with my wife (who I met at Merton) and our three sons. When I’m not working, I’m usually exploring London by bus and tube with my youngest, or providing a reliable taxi service for the older two — both of which have been excellent training for patience and risk management.
