The news reaches England

19th June 1924

The news reached London in the afternoon of 19th June, and the Irvine family on Friday 20th June at 7 p.m., via telegram. The tragedy remained personal only for a few hours, as the following morning the story was all over the press. The first memorial service for Sandy was held in Merton College Chapel, on 26th June. On the same day, another memorial service was held in St John's Church, Birkenhead, and taken by the Revd Herbert Leigh-Mallory, George's father. On 5th July, the Times published Norton's dispatch containing the details of the last climb, which he had sent on 11th June.
