Oxford Women’s Blues Triumph in 2025 Varsity Lacrosse Match
The Oxford Women’s Blues Lacrosse Team secured a historic victory in the 109th annual Varsity Lacrosse Match against Cambridge on 1 March 2025 at Emmanuel College Sports Ground, Cambridge. With a commanding performance, Oxford clinched a 13-7 win, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, skill, and resilience.
The atmosphere in Cambridge was electric, with spectators lining all sides of the pitch to witness the much-anticipated showdown. Determined to redeem themselves after a disappointing end to the BUCS knockout games, the Oxford team worked relentlessly in training for two weeks leading up to the Varsity clash, keeping their sights firmly set on defeating Cambridge.
Merton DPhil student Miranda Bate contributed to Oxford’s strong start, winning the first two draw controls and scoring the opening two goals to give Oxford an early 2-0 lead. From that moment on, Oxford maintained control, delivering their best performance of the season and showcasing their outstanding cohesion as a team.
However, the match was not without its tense moments. After halftime, Cambridge mounted a fierce comeback, closing the gap and intensifying the pressure. In a strategic move, Cambridge face-marked Miranda and team captain Isla, forcing the rest of the Oxford squad to step up. Rising to the challenge, Oxford focused on winning crucial draw controls and maintaining possession, executing their game plan flawlessly to secure the victory.
Reflecting on the triumph, Miranda shared, 'It feels amazing. This was one of my goals at the start of my DPhil. I played for England Lacrosse in the past and went to the US for my undergrad on a lacrosse scholarship to play NCAA Division 1 (the highest level). It has been so much fun playing with Oxford this season, and it was incredible to get the win away at Cambridge - our first away victory in around 11 away games, spanning over 22 years!'
