Merton Student to Cox Oxford Women’s Crew in 2025 Boat Race
Merton student, Daniel Orton, has been selected as the coxswain for the Oxford women’s Blue Boat in the upcoming Boat Race, continuing the College’s proud tradition of contributing to the University’s sporting success.
Daniel, a second-year physics undergraduate, began coxing in 2018 at Latymer Upper School, inspired by watching his brother compete at the National Schools' Regatta. His keen interest in applying mathematical techniques to real-world scenarios aligns well with the precision and strategy required in his role as cox. His selection is a testament to his leadership, skill, and ability to navigate high-pressure racing conditions.
The Boat Race, an annual contest between Oxford and Cambridge, is one of the most prestigious events in university sport. The 2025 edition will take place on 13 April, with the women's race scheduled for 1.21pm and the men's race following at 2.21pm. The 4.25-mile course along the River Thames from Putney to Mortlake will once again test the endurance, teamwork, and tactical prowess of both crews.
