Medicine student Nicholas Black wins Meakins McClaran Medal

Final year Medicine graduate student Nicholas Black has been awarded the Meakins McClaran Prize. The prize, which comprises a medal and a cash sum, is awarded annually for the outstanding overall performance of a student graduating with the degrees of BM, B.Ch. (Oxf). When making the award, performance in the First BM, the Preliminary Examination in Medicine and the Second BM are all looked at; both examination performance and general aptitude are taken into account.

The prize was endowed by the renowned surgeon Professor Jonathan L Meakins, Nuffield Professor of Surgery 2002-2008, and his wife Dr Jacqueline McClaran.

Commenting on the award, Nicholas said:

"I am extremely honoured and proud to have been awarded this prize. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here in Oxford and this is a lovely way to bring my time as a medical student to an end. I would like to thank all my teachers at Merton and the John Radcliffe Hospital for all their guidance and support."

This is only the most recent of Nicholas's successes; he has previously been awarded the 2016 Iowa elective scholarship, the Matilda Tambyraja Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Hobson-Mann Memorial Scholarship (awarded to the top eight clinical students in their fourth and fifth years), and the 2016 Mortensen Prize in Surgery (awarded for coming top in the Surgical part of the final exams).
