July Open Days go virtual

Following the agreement to hold next week's July Open Days virtually, anyone thinking of applying to Merton will instead be able to join us online to access insights, advice and information to help them decide which course and college is right for them.

The two Virtual Open Days, taking place on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 July, will give you the chance to chat to some of our current students studying a range of different subjects, as well as their tutors. You’ll also be able to explore Merton’s grounds and facilities through a virtual tour video, and access lots of other information about every aspect of life at Merton.

The University of Oxford has created a portal website, which will offer lots of advice and signpost content about degrees, departments/faculties, colleges and central services. You will also have an opportunity to put your questions directly to students and to academic tutors.

Rebecca, who is currently studying French, says:

“I never thought I’d fit in at university, never mind Oxford, so I get that some of you might feel nervous to join in but please do: we’re all excited to meet you, and be a friendly (if distanced!) face to reassure you, help you feel as at home as we do at our college, and to answer all your questions, big or small!

“Merton is such a warm and inclusive place, and we’re proud of being a tightly-knit and supportive community. We hope we can show you that you can be part of our community during our Virtual Open Days, and beyond!”

And History undergraduate Grace added:

“I’ve been helping edit YouTube videos for the Virtual Open Days, and the love for our college that shines through is undeniable.  Some people worry that Oxford seems an inaccessible place and that only ‘a certain type of person’ goes there. That’s why Open Days are so vital for showcasing what a wide range of people love to live and study here. If you’re undecided on a subject, a college, or on university in general, there’s no better way to have a good think, ask questions, and explore possibilities.

“In short: take the opportunity to have Oxford University demystified, because it is a place for everyone who deserves a top education.”

We’re as strongly committed as ever to supporting students in making informed decisions about studying at Merton and the University, despite the coronavirus restrictions. Our aim is to ensure that all potential applicants feel welcomed, regardless of their background or circumstances.

We'd encourage anyone thinking about applying to Oxford to sign up for the latest news from the University. Their regular newsletters offer important updates, as well as insights into student life, and detailed advice and guidance on the steps to making a strong application.

And make sure you're following us on social media - either via the College's Facebook page or Twitter feed, or the JCR's Instagram feed - to keep updated on the Virtual Open Days.

We’re looking forward to seeing you!
