Life at Merton: Facilities - Libraries

Merton has two well-funded student libraries – the Old Warden’s Lodgings (OWL) and Mob Lower Library. Opening hours are 07:30 to 02:00.  Both libraries offer free to use multi-function photocopying, printing and scanning machines, as well as computer rooms and free WiFi.  The College’s Upper Library is sometimes opened for students to see the beautiful 16th-century interior, which houses the collection of early printed books.

The emphasis of the libraries is keeping collections up-to-date, making available to students the main texts needed by them.  All college members can suggest library purchases, both in print and electronic formats.

In addition to the main academic collections, Merton’s library has smaller collections for lighter reading and student interest including recently-published prize-winning books, an Equality and Diversity collection, and books on academic skills development.

Our library staff are happy to assist students in accessing resources, complementing provision by the University’s Bodleian Library and subject libraries.  They also work closely with students with disabilities to ensure that they can make full use of the materials they need.  A range of equipment is available to assist with working in the libraries including coloured sheet overlays, reading rules, magnification equipment, white-boards, a portable hearing loop, height-adjustable desks and lumbar-support cushions.

OWL

This library is located in an Edwardian house that was originally built for the Warden (Head of the College) to live in. This gives it a cosy and homely feel, with each room housing different subject collections. The rooms differ in their size and feel, with many having original fireplaces and window seats.  This makes for a welcoming and pleasant study environment and provides a variety of spaces, including that can be used for group work and discussion.

Mob Library

Mob Library is a smaller ground-floor space, located in our oldest quad with views over Chestnut Law.  It houses several subject collections such as music and book history, as well as the non-academic collections, including books written by former and current members of the College.

More information about the library can be found here.
