The Cleves-Mark Prayer Book: A Dismembered Manuscript of the Turn of the 16th Century from the Rhenish Lowlands

You are invited to a work-in-progress talk by Professor James H. Marrow, Princeton University.

Dismembered as early as the mid-to-late 19th century, the ‘Cleves-Mark Prayer Book’ survives in a set of two fragmentary bound volumes and a series of single leaves. Professor Marrow will discuss the known surviving parts of the manuscript, the distinctive structure of its contents, the style and iconographic features of its rich program of decoration and illustration, what can be deduced about its patronage, and the evidence permitting it to be dated and localized.

Event hosted jointly by the Oxford Medieval Manuscripts Group and the Merton History of the Book Group.

All are welcome, including those who are just curious!
