Merton Society London Lecture
Our speaker was Professor James Binney FRS, Emeritus Fellow and Professor of Physics at Oxford University. Professor Binney is a theoretical physicist who studies the structure and formation of galaxies. His research group creates models of the galaxy with which they aim to map the distribution of gravitating matter through the galaxy, and so to deduce how it was formed and how it evolved to its present state.
The title of Professor Binney’s talk was ‘Understanding our Galaxy’. Covering a mixture of history, geography & physics, there was something for everyone.
We are grateful to Steven Inchcoombe (1984), Chief Publishing Officer of Springer Nature, and Gregory Lim (2006), Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Cardiology, for kindly hosting us for the evening.
