The Halsbury Society, the law society of Merton College, welcomed Lord Justice Beatson QC, who gave a talk entitled 'Challenges and Opportunities for the Independence of the Judiciary in the 21st Century'.

Lord Justice Beatson is perhaps best known for his dedication and success in both the legal profession and legal academia. Having been called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1972, practising at the prominent Essex Court Chambers, he later became a Law Commissioner where he did highly regarded work in the areas of contract, commercial and administrative law. Moreover, Lord Justice Beatson remains affiliated to numerous outstanding academic institutions, being an Honorary Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge as well as at Merton, indicative of his numerous legal writings and textbooks. Sir Jack Beatson has been a Lord Justice of Appeal since January 2013 and has a wealth of experience and expertise in relation to this topic.
