Choral Workshop Day

2024

The date of the Choral Workshop in 2024 is February 8th. A recommendation form will be open from January 15th.

Choral Workshop Day

Each year in February, Merton offers a Choral Workshop Day for students in Year 11 & 12 who are interested in Choral Scholarships at Merton.

The day gives students a chance to experience a day of workshops with our singing teachers and Director of Music, learn more about life as a Choral Scholar, visit Merton and take a look around, as well as sing Evensong with the Merton College Choir.

The day runs from 10.30am to 7pm and will be led by our Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas. There will be an opportunity to learn about the admissions procedure, to meet current students, to sing with the choir, and to enjoy lunch and tea in the College Hall. Potential candidates will also be able to sing in a workshop led by our singing teachers Giles Underwood and Carys Lane, and hear a short recital by the College Choir. Accompanying teachers will have the opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and the college as well.

Advice for Teachers

Prospective choral scholars are expected to be gifted academically as well as musically, and we hope that students who hold both these qualities will be encouraged to attend the Choral Workshop.

Before you complete the recommendation form, we advise that you prepare the following information about each of your recommended students:

  • Voice part
  • Dietary Restrictions
  • Any information that will enable us to make the day accessible re: disability or access requirements
  • A short recommendation for each pupil
  • Parental permission to take part in the workshop day, be photographed, and take part in a livestreamed Evensong at Merton
