Beach, pool... or Forth Rail Bridge?

Midsummer, and while many of us head for sunnier climes in order to lounge by a pool or on a beach, Catherine Farfan, our Alumni Communications Officer, chose instead to jump—or rather, abseil—off the Forth Rail Bridge.

Catherine explains what lay behind this rather odd decision:

"When my brother started at Glasgow University in September, he contracted what we all thought was 'Freshers' Flu'. However, this turned out to be a whole lot more traumatic when he was admitted to the Western General Infirmary, Glasgow with meningococcal septicaemia.

"We are lucky that he's still with us, with all his limbs intact, and so far with no ongoing side effects. So to help make sure as few people as possible go through what he did last year, we decided to fundraise for the Meningitis Research Foundation by doing a sponsored abseil."

Catherine, along with her brother, sister and mother, set themselves a fundraising target of £1,000, but have been delighted by the response:

"We're feeling very proud and grateful to have raised almost £1,500 to date, money which will go towards a cause that has meant so much to us recently."
