Merton Annual Telephone Campaign 2024

We are delighted to announce our Telethon 2024! Throughout March, our students will be calling Old Mertonians around the world, connecting right from the heart of the College.

Please meet our team of student callers who are excited to hear about your experience of the College and share stories of what life is like at Merton today. They are also keen to find out about the varied paths our alumni take after leaving Merton, and gain insight into possible careers.

If you have any questions, please contact development@merton.ox.ac.uk or call +44 (0)1865 286312.

Meet the 2024 Telethon Callers

Shamin Ahmed

Hi, I'm Shamin, a second-year Law student from Karachi, Pakistan. As the JCR international student's representative, I've enjoyed being able to ease international students' transition into the chaos that is Oxford and Merton! I've further been involved with Oxford Women in Law, Oxford Pakistan Society and I occasionally row for the college women's team. Through the telethon, I hope to be able to learn about the diverse array of experiences that alumni have had, not only at Merton but also life after their degree!

Estelle Byrne

Hi! I’m Estelle, a second year studying Philosophy & Spanish here at Merton. Outside of academics, I captain the women’s college football team, write (sometimes poetry, sometimes prose), and occasionally attempt to solve the mysteries of the universe (thus far, my attempts have proven unsuccessful). I’m keen to give back to the college however I can, and this telethon provides the perfect opportunity to do so. And, of course, I’m excited to speak to Merton alumni, from whom I don’t doubt I have a lot to learn- both in terms of their memories of Merton, and all the experiences that followed!

Hello, my name is Victor and I am a second-year law student from Hong Kong. My main hobbies include going to the gym and rowing where I hold a 165kg squat ;). During the telethon, I am looking forward to meeting the alumni of Merton College, and to hearing about what they have managed to do after university.

Lucy Gough

Hi, I’m Lucy and I’m a second year studying French. In my free time outside of my degree I love to read and enjoy going for runs around the lovely parks in oxford. I am looking forward to hearing about all the different experiences of Merton’s alumni during their time here, what things may or may not have changed, and what they have been getting up to since leaving.

Hi! My name is Imy, and I'm a third year here at Merton studying Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. I love the archaeology side of my degree and going on excavations. Aside from my studies I am very active in the University Hockey club and I also co-captain the Merton-Mansfield college hockey team. I have been a student caller twice before and have thoroughly enjoyed it, I can't wait to meet new people this year!

Luke Liang

Hi! I'm Luke, a first year reading PPE at Merton. When I'm not studying in OWL, I love to cook and host tea parties. Given that I've picked such a broad degree, I'm fascinated to learn about all the different things I could do in the future and am really looking forward to meeting people who have once walked the same path that I am now.

Yuntian Liu

Hi, my name is Yuntian and I’m a second-year Philosophy and French student. When I’m not scratching my head over symbolic logic, I enjoy some carefree piano sessions, as well as reading and listening to French poetry. I really look forward to hearing stories from alumni about their memories at Merton and their life after.

Jessica Lonnen

Hi, I'm Jess, and I'm in my second year studying history and politics. When I'm not juggling the two of those, I'm usually found rowing (I'm the women's vice captain this year!) or organising an event for our fantastic feminist society, the 1980 society. I'm really looking forward to hearing from alumni about their time at the college and their journeys since.

Hi, I'm Becka, and I'm a second-year linguist studying French and German! Outside of my degree, I am the women's captain for Merton College Boat Club, and the Environment Rep for the Merton JCR. My favourite activities include reading anything I can get my hands on, gardening in the Merton Veg Patch, and trying to pick up Italian through the Language School. During the telethon I'm looking forward to getting to know a wide range of people and hearing about their memories of Merton and where they have gone since then!

Hannah Radley

Hi! I am a second-year English undergrad with a particular interest in Shakespeare. My favourite thing about Merton is the people and the sense of community that is generated, and I am looking forward to hearing about the alumnus' experiences while at college. Outside of my studies, I enjoy Doctor Who and run the Merton College Poetry Society with Florence and another of our friends.

Florence Wolter

Hi, I’m Florence, a second-year English student. Perhaps not unsurprising given my subject, I love poetry – I run the Merton College Poetry Society with my friends Hannah and Josh. We’ve really loved holding the weekly meetings, as well as celebrating the many wonderful poets here at Merton in our termly pamphlet. This also gives me the opportunity to channel some of my creativity in designing the cover, this term featuring the iconic scorpion sculpture in the Fitzjames Arch. I can’t wait to hear what alumni love about Merton too.
