Professor Michael Baker and his wife Gabrielle Perfect

The Michael Baker Tutorship

The Michael Baker Tutorship will honour the great legacy of our very first tutor in Physics. Michael was passionate about the power of the tutorial system to develop young minds, and he is remembered as a very supportive and caring tutor. The appeal aims to permanently endow a Tutorship in his name, and thereby provide the necessary financial backing for preserving our academic excellence in Physics for future generations.

Last December, MC3 Life Trustee Reg Hall (1954, Chemistry) generously pledged $100,000 as a matching gift towards the Baker Tutorship. We have been thrilled by the response to this special campaign, which has now been completed and has brought the Tutorship appeal past the half-way point towards its target of £1 million. We would like to convey our deepest thanks to Reg and to everyone who made donations.

We are now absolutely delighted to announce that a second matching gift has been pledged for the Baker Tutorship by Stephen Quake (1991, DPhil Theoretical Physics). Stephen has very generously made £100,000 available in matched funds, and he will double* the value of any gifts made to this appeal! We are enormously grateful to Stephen, and we hope that you will take advantage of this incredible opportunity to maximise the impact of your support. To donate, please follow the links below:

Stephen is a professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at Stanford University and serves as co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. He is well known for inventing many measurement and diagnostic tools for biology and medicine. Stephen commented:

“I am very glad to be supporting this appeal in honour of Michael Baker. He was my College Advisor during my DPhil, and I remember him as very kind, caring and supportive. He was an example of the best that Merton and Oxford can offer, and he built Merton Physics from the ground up. I am delighted to help the College carry on his legacy.”

*Gifts made in currencies other than British Pounds (GBP) will be matched using the average exchange rate on the day the gift was made. Monthly, quarterly, and annual gifts will be matched for the first year of the donation.
