The 750th Anniversary Campaign, Sustaining Excellence, was Merton’s largest ever fundraising campaign, with a target of £30 million, money vital to sustaining the College as a centre of academic excellence at a national and international level.
Merton’s 750th Anniversary Campaign had the following priorities:
The Campaign closes - autumn 2014
We were delighted to announce in autumn 2014 that some 2,825 donors enabled us to reach the 750th Anniversary Campaign target of £30 million - thank you.
In August 2007 the College launched its largest capital campaign to date, with a goal of raising £30 million to guarantee the tutorial system, support students and protect and resource its historic buildings.
With the generous help of many Mertonians and Friends, giving gifts of all sizes, the College was able to secure many of its core priorities. Eight Tutorial Fellowships were endowed in Chemistry, Classics, Economics, English, History, Modern Asian History, Music and Philosophy. Protecting these key positions has been vital to securing the tutorial system.
Income raised to endow Undergraduate Student Support now covers £70,000 of the £90,000 cost the College incurs to fund Merton-Oxford bursaries, which supports students who would not otherwise be able to study at Merton and take advantage of the wonderful Oxford experience.
Many Graduate Scholarships were funded, supporting Graduate Students studying Physics, Chinese Archaeology, International Development, Global Wellbeing, Maths, Humanities and Law. The global significance and impact of Merton Graduate students and their research cannot be understated.
Huge improvements were also made to the College and its beautiful buildings and grounds, including the refurbishment of the lodge, the installation of the MC3 fitness room and, of course, the state-of-the-art TS Eliot Theatre.
None of this would have been possible without the visionary support and generosity of all of you who supported the 750th Campaign. Thank you.
