Junior Dean

Merton College proposes to appoint a Junior Dean (traditionally known as the Deputy Principal of the Postmasters) from 17 September 2012. The Deputy Principal of the Postmasters will assist the Principal of the Postmasters and other college officers in the smooth running of the College community, and must be available to deal with disciplinary problems as and when they arise. The postholder will be required to reside in college, free of charge, and will also receive free meals at high table, and a stipend of £3,620 per annum (at current rates). Applicants should already be, or expect to be, engaged in academic study at Oxford University at the postgraduate or postdoctoral level. The appointment will be made for one year in the first instance, but with the possibility of renewal for up to a maximum of three years in total.

Welfare Dean

Merton College proposes to appoint a Welfare Dean from 17 September 2012.  Junior members with a variety of problems are encouraged to contact the Welfare Dean, who may either resolve the problem or bring it to a College Officer. The position is equivalent to that of a Junior Dean in other Colleges but with an emphasis on welfare rather than discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake an appropriate course of training in welfare issues. The Welfare Dean will be required to reside in college, free of charge, and will also receive free meals including some high table dining rights and a stipend of £3,620 per annum (at current rates). Fitzjames Research Fellowship in Physical Chemistry

Merton College proposes to elect to a four-year Fitzjames Research Fellowship in Physical Chemistry to commence in October 2012.  This career development post will allow a promising academic at an early stage in his or her career to combine substantial support for research with the opportunity to develop skills in teaching and academic administration.  It is expected that the postholder’s research will be conducted within one of Oxford University’s chemistry research laboratories. The teaching commitment will be up to six hours per week in full term.

The stipend will be £27,114 p.a. and the Fellow will be entitled to meals and accommodation in College, if available (or a housing allowance) and other benefits.

Finance Bursar

Merton College has been at the forefront of education and research at the University of Oxford since 1264. It is a vibrant and diverse academic community comprising some 600 undergraduates and graduate students. The College is governed by c.70 Fellows who sit on the Governing Body under the Chairmanship of the Warden. The Governing Body now seeks to appoint a Finance Bursar to play a central role in ensuring the smooth running of the College. As a full member of the Governing Body, the Finance Bursar will take the lead in the continued development of the College’s financial strategy and the management and care of its assets and resources, including its substantial investment portfolio.
